5 Skincare Tips for Winter

5 Skincare Tips for Winter

November 25, 2019 | Fashion

Are you ready to experience a New York winter? While walking around the city right after a snowy day is beautiful, the freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your skin. Avoid dry skin and ensure you’re glowing this winter with the following skincare tips.

Stay Hydrated

Our body is mostly water. Come winter, our skin’s water reserves become depleted. Though many of us don’t crave water at this time of year, it’s important to drink up. Opt for lukewarm water, herbal tea and infused water to keep things interesting. Remember that alcoholic drinks like spiced wine and eggnog are good but they can also increase dehydration.

Exfoliate Gently

Emphasis on “gently.” If you are an avid exfoliator, you’ll know that shedding the layer of dead skin cells reveals beautiful skin and improves circulation. However, in the winter months, exfoliating too much or too vigorously may have negative effects. The dryness and cold air of winter reduces the moisture in your skin, therefore, exfoliating could cause irritation. Keep it gentle and apply a nourishing cream as soon as possible.

Moisturize your Body and Hair

The worst part about winter is having dry and flaky skin, especially in the hands. Invest in deep moisturizers containing nourishing ingredients like shea butter, sweet almond oil, beeswax, honey and coconut oil. Don’t forget about your hair! Applying deep conditioners with the same ingredients to your hair once a week during winter will prevent your locks from becoming dry, breaking and falling.

Use Lip Balm

Speaking of dry skin, what about your lips? Chapped lips is an all too common winter ailment, especially if you’re not drinking enough water and tend to wet your lips too often. Avoid cracked and flaky lips by exfoliating gently with a wet toothbrush and applying a moisturizing lip balm. Carry it with you to reapply as needed throughout the day. There are many clean beauty stores in NYC that go above and beyond the plain lip balm, but our favorite is Winky Lux. Check out their lip balms with real chrysanthemums inside!

Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen in winter? Absolutely. Even the most overcast days can burn the skin, especially if there’s snow on the ground. Look for sunscreens of at least 20 SPF—choose 50 SPF if you’re out in the snow—that don’t contain harmful ingredients. Remember how to use it properly: apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and wait for the sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin before putting clothes on.
